Adopting a Puppy!

When adopting a puppy it's a good idea to already have a breed in mind. Maybe one that is good with children or one the doesn't need a lot of space. One that doesn't need grooming or one that would make a great show dog if properly trained. If you don't know yet what breed you might like, you probably want to see our section on Dog Breeds to help you choose. Once you have a breed in mind (whether a pure bred or a mixture or even a mutt) you might want to find somewhere in your area where you can get your dream dog. A local dog rescue or a pound might be a good place to start. You could also search your local newspaper for adds on where to find a dog breeder in your area or someone whose dog has just had puppies. I strongly suggest you not go to a puppy mill because often dog's from puppy mills are not as healthy after living in the cramped conditions and are severely emotionally and physically scarred. Adopting a dog from a puppy mill does not protect it from the puppy mill but just ensures the mill stays in business. If you want to rescue a dog you should contact the ASPCA or a more localized dog rescue. Of course if you are not interested in the work involved in training a puppy or you just don't have time you can always adopt an older dog one that has maybe already been trained. This dog will be just as lovable as a puppy and just as great of an addition to any house hold.
Once you have an idea of what sort of dog you want, where you can get this dog and have a date set to come and pick up your dog you need to prepare your house and yourself for your new roommate.
